When our Editor-in-Chief, Shelly Brown, bought a home on St. George Island, we could not wait to explore. The quiet beach felt almost untouched—like a well-kept secret, welcoming us without the hustle and bustle we typically expect of beach towns. It led us to wonder… what other gems are hiding along the southern coast? Go ahead and pack your bags—you’ll want to enjoy island hopping and beach bumming all summer long!

St. George Island, Florida’s forgotten coast

Located in the Gulf of Mexico, this 22 mile barrier island is a dream—unspoiled and uncrowded beaches make it feel like your own private island. After exploring the beaches, venture out to the bay forest, dunes, or salt marshes for a change of scenery. There’s so much to see and do, you might as well start planning your second visit… and your third.

Stay:

Island Suites - Located on the beachfront and within walking distance of shops and restaurants, Island Suites is in the middle of it all! Each room has a private balcony that looks over the Gulf of Mexico so that you never miss a sunset. 

Eat:

Cafe con Leche - This local favorite serves breakfast and lunch with delicious coffee and homemade pastries—and you can shop art and jewelry from local artists!

Tamaras Café - Local fish is purchased and served daily at this Florida restaurant with South American flair.

Play:

Operation Recreation GeoTour - Enjoy a high-tech treasure hunt that requires players to use a smartphone or GPS device to find hidden treasures at Bald Point State Park on Alligator Point and St. George Island State Park.

Panhandle Players - Visit the historic Chapman Auditorium to see a production by this community theater group!

Birding - Break out your binoculars, because St. George Island offers outstanding birding opportunities year round. You might find Warblers, Osprey, Buff-bellied Hummingbird, and so many more!

Insider’s Tip:

In the fall, St. George island fills up with breathtaking monarch butterflies. The island is their last stop before they finish migrating over the Gulf of Mexico for their winter rest. It’s a beautiful time to visit!
