Greenwood for the Holidays

Greenwood for the Holidays

There’s no better time than the holidays for a visit to the Mississippi hotspot

Words by Paige Townley

The holidays are always the most wonderful time of the year, but they are made even merrier and certainly brighter in Greenwood, Mississippi.

The heart of the Mississippi Delta, Greenwood has a rich history and unique culture. The town is perhaps most famous as the home of the blues—Greenwood even features the Blues Trail featuring more than 100 historic markers noting its place in the music’s history—but here, so much more can be found and enjoyed. There are iconic culinary offerings, a variety of shopping destinations, museums, adventure and more. Yet at the holidays, these distinctions are even more special as the Delta city turns up the magic and layers on the charm to offer a season that makes everyone want to come to town.

Throughout the season, Greenwood puts a Delta-style spin on all of the classic holiday festivities. That means there’s so much to fit into the holiday schedule while in town, from checking out the city, strolling through the many shops, dining at one of the many culinary establishments, and enjoying the cool, southern breeze. It also means planning a stay at the Alluvian Hotel and Spa, which is all decked out over the holidays in its seasonal best.

The special season officially kicks off each year with the Citywide Holiday Open House, a multi-night event that features a carriage ride around the spectacularly decorated town, Santa sightings, fun giveaways, and even food and beverages that can be enjoyed at a variety of local shops.

The magic of the holidays continues with a special Christmas parade, the Roy Martin Delta Band Festival and Christmas Parade, and it’s one that can’t be found anywhere else. The annual event offers a holiday market with all sorts of unique and locally-made goods, and it culminates in a spectacular show of fireworks high above the Yazoo River.

For those wanting to take a little more of Greenwood home with them once the season is over, signing up for classes at the Viking Cooking School while in town is a must. The school offers classes for everyone—from the first-timer to the most experienced of chefs—and it’s a great way to learn how to prepare the classic southern dishes for which the town is known.

With so much to see—and even more to do—it’s time to make plans for a holiday visit to Greenwood. A visit here will easily be a holiday hit!
