Mobile’s Craft Brew Crawl

Mobile’s Craft Brew Crawl

Explore downtown’s growing brewery scene

Though to many, craft beer seems like a new trend, it’s really a return to tradition. Before the prohibition era, craft brewers were common, each using the resources from their region to create distinct local brews. In fact, before 1909, the craft brew industry was thriving in Alabama. Now, in 2022, it’s thriving again—and Mobile is proof.

There’s no better way to spend a summer afternoon than sipping and strolling your way through Downtown Mobile. Downtown Mobile, just off the Mobile River, is a mecca for craft brew enthusiasts. Visitors can park their car and forget about it, because the afternoon can be spent brewery hopping on foot. That’s right—there are four craft breweries within walking distance of each other. We’ll cheers to that!

Old Majestic Brewing Company

Named in honor of America’s national tree, the majestic oak, Old Majestic Brewing Company opened their doors in December of 2019. Not only do they brew and serve quality beers, they also focus on educating their customers. As they say on their website, “Anyone can drink a beer, but we wanted to educate our consumers to learn more about beer and how to enjoy it.” The menu constantly changes, but each week you can expect to find unique flavors like Mumbai Blurry Curry, a cream ale served over a peach-lime purée.

Braided River Brewing Company

Southerners are no stranger to hot, sunny days, and Braided River Brewing Company brews the perfect summer companion. Their name comes from the way multiple rivers “braid” together in the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta, and the outdoor spirit of the Delta region also reflects the sense of adventure they hope to inspire in their visitors. It also aligns with their mission of sustainability and support for local environmental agencies. Their main focus is drinkable session ales, or beers with low levels of alcohol, but they have experimental options worth trying as well.

Iron Hand Brewing

Located within the DeTonti Square Historic District, Iron Hand Brewing is aptly named after the district’s namesake—French explorer Henri “Iron Hand” DeTonti. It’s a spot that makes you want to sit and stay awhile, full of great food, great conversation, and of course, great beer. Stop by on one of the themed Bingo nights, and you might hear a few dad jokes and see a few costumes! They feature both house brews and guest taps, and you shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to try Iron Hand Ben’s Oatmeal Stout!

Oyster City Brewing Company

This spot is Oyster City’s third location, but its first in Mobile. What began as a homebrew setup in Apalachicola, Florida has turned into a local hotspot. It’s no wonder why, with flagship beers like the Mangrove, a classic pale ale fermented with mango. If you like it enough, you can visit the onsite merch shop and represent the brand yourself! The bar encircles some of the brewing equipment, so a visit to the taproom gets you an up close look at how the brews are made. Be sure to check their calendar to learn about community concerts and events!
