Plan the Perfect Derby Day Party

Plan the Perfect Derby Day Party

It’s been a difficult year, but the future's looking bright! Last year, we missed out on many of the holidays, events, and gatherings that we enjoy, so this year we want to make the most of every moment. Derby Day is right around the corner, which means you should start planning your Derby party now—and we’ve got the inside scoop on how to plan the perfect party.

Send Invites

The invitations set the tone of the party. This is where you let your guests know all of the important details of the event, including the date, time, and dress code. While sending online invitations is acceptable, it’s a little more fun to send them the good old-fashioned way—through the mail!

Get Decorations

Everyone knows Derby outfits make a statement, and you want your decor to match! Vintage glasses and silver ice buckets make even the food and beverage tables look beautiful—and of course you can’t forget the roses. The race is also known as “The Run for the Roses,” so no Derby party is complete without them!

Prepare the Food and Drinks

When it comes to the food, southern classics are the way to go—pimento cheese dip, deviled eggs, biscuits, and Derby pie, to name a few. Mint Juleps are a must, but Old Fashioneds are a crowd-pleaser too. Take your party up a notch with wine from Kendall-Jackson Winery and La Crema, the Preferred Wines of the Kentucky Derby. If you can’t be at Churchill Downs yourself, you might as well pour yourself a glass of the wine they’re pouring!

Get Dressed Up

There’s no such thing as subtlety when it comes to dressing up for Derby Day. Encourage your guests to wear brightly colored dresses, fun hats, and full suits. Bold prints and patterns are the way to go. You might even have your guests vote on who is best-dressed!

Have Fun

Games are a great way to keep the day lively, even though the race is over in just a few minutes. Have your guests make bets on the winner, or play Derby Day trivia! Remember—the point of a party is to enjoy time with friends and loved ones. Don’t stress over the details, and make sure you’re having fun!
