Mark your calendar for Cullman’s annual Strawberry Festival on Saturday, May 7

Words by Paige Townley

Everyone loves a good strawberry, but historically the sweet red berry probably has been loved a little more in Cullman, Alabama. The importance of strawberries goes way back in this north Alabama city. Strawberries have actually been a top agricultural product for Cullman since 1898. Highlighting this special history is the city’s annual Strawberry Festival, which is one of the longest-running and most historic strawberry festivals in Alabama.

An annual event dedicated to all things strawberry, the Cullman Strawberry Festival is set this year for Saturday, May 7, and the day’s events are as sweet as the fruity focus of the festival. All day the Festhalle Farmers Market will be hosting farmers selling their produce, which, of course, includes baskets of strawberries but so much more. Also on site will be an Arts & Crafts Show featuring a wide array of local vendors selling their handmade wares and unique crafts.

A highlight of the Cullman Strawberry Festival each year is the Miss Strawberry Festival Pageant that is held in the weeks prior to the festivities on April 23, allowing the newly-crowned queen to enjoy the festival as well. On site at the May 7 festival, four-legged friends will have their own opportunity to be part of the Doggy “Paw”geant and After Party.

Anyone with a competitive streak can sign up to partake in the Strawberry Festival Baking Competition, which of course will focus on the best strawberry dish. For those looking to simply enjoy a bite while watching the competition, there will also be food vendors set up on site.

Throughout the day, there will also be fun and games set up for the kids—or for anyone young at heart—including rides, inflatables, and even mobile arcades, as well as live entertainment to close out the evening by a long list of musical artists. Some of the recent Strawberry Festival band lineups have included the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Eve 6, and Pine Hill Haints.
