It’s the season of small businesses. Consumers are being choosier with where they spend their money, and there’s been a renewed focus on supporting local. From shopping for produce at the farmers’ market to breakfast at a mom-and-pop diner, we all want to support the people and places that make our communities special—and it works. In fact, every dollar you spend at a local business has three times the economic benefit of making the same purchase at a chain retailer. Thankfully, it’s easy to shop small in the South. There’s no limit to creative and innovative entrepreneurs, so next time you’re shopping...shop small!

HiFi Cookies - Sean Newsome

Who are you?

We are a craft cookie company based in Nashville TN. HiFi is founded out of my love for music and sweets! The goal was to make delicious and creative cookies that sort of push the envelope of what a typical cookie can be—But also to create items that gain their inspiration from artists and music I love. Cookies like the "Bonita Applebum" is one example: A chai spiced cookie with apple butter cream and pie crumbs that gains its inspiration from the Tribe Called Quest song.

Where can people find you?

We are located at 733 Porter Rd in Nashville, Tennessee. Our shop is in East Nashville. Most folks would call it the hip, brooklyn-esque part of Nashville. I would agree, East side is "hip," but it also has a strong sense of community, great food, and an incredible music scene.

What do you do?

It sounds strange to say, but I bake cookies! I bake other desserts, obviously, but cookies are where it's at for me. Now that we have our own shop it will be nice to grow the brand into some other desserts. I love ice cream sandwiches, and we plan on adding them to the menu once we open the doors.

Why do you do it?

I grew up in my grandmother and my mother's kitchen—Food has always been a big part of my life. I was the kid sitting in the kitchen watching my grandmother cook while my cousins played outside. Both my mother and my grandmother were huge music fans, and music was constantly on while they worked. I was raised with the idea that music and food go hand in hand. Surprisingly, I was never a big sweets kid, but I loved cookies and ice cream. So when  I decided I wanted to do something of my own, it was a pretty easy conclusion. The name came from the term high fidelity, which is used in music to denote higher quality sound. Our goal was to make the highest quality cookie!
