Top Three Things for Families to do in Mobile This Summer

Words by Paige Townley

There’s nothing quite like summertime in the South, and that goes double in Mobile. Mobile is so much more than a Port City situated on Mobile Bay—it’s a historical destination brimming with culture, tradition, and southern hospitality. It’s actually referred to by many as the cultural center of the Gulf Coast, and it’s home to experiences that can’t be found anywhere else. Here are our three favorite things for families to discover in Mobile this summer.

Visit a historic museum or attraction.

As the oldest city in the state of Alabama—and one of the oldest on the entire Gulf Coast, Mobile boasts a unique history. Luckily, it’s one that visitors can easily explore in a variety of museums and attractions.

One of the most popular in the city is USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. The USS Alabama started its career in World War II, eventually docking in Mobile as a National Historic Landmark and the park was officially created. Ever since, the historic attraction has been a sought-after spot for learning about the ship’s history and the nation’s military history.

Bellingrath Gardens & Home is the historic estate of Walter and Bessie Bellingrath. Visitors are taken back in time when viewing the 1850s home’s original antique furnishings and extensive collection of art, silver, china, and crystal. Adding to the mystique of the property is Bellingrath Gardens, a 65-acre garden that surrounds the home.

For hands-on adventure in more of a scientific setting, there’s the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center. Focused exclusively on science, the facility features a variety of exciting exhibits, live demonstrations, and educational fun.

Enjoy a FREE summer event.

The calendar in Mobile each summer is always jampacked with fun festivities for the entire family. After all, the city is the original home of America’s favorite party, Mardi Gras.

One of Mobile’s many can’t miss events is 2nd Weekend in Mobile. Every second weekend of the month, the city kicks off the event with the LoDa ArtWalk, which features the best local art, music, food, and culture before rolling into Saturday’s festivities at Cooper Riverside Park, which includes live music and food trucks.

Visitors can get out and get active by taking part in Roll Mobile. Hosted in the beautiful Bienville Square, Roll Mobile is a skate night featuring a live DJ, lights, and a full night of fun.

Relax and rejuvenate at a luxury hotel and spa.

After a full day of exploration, it’s time for a little relaxation, and there’s no better place to do it than one of the city’s luxurious spas. Located in the heart of downtown Mobile, Battle House Renaissance Mobile Hotel & Spa houses its very own spa, a lavish retreat from the hustle and bustle. While enjoying one of its many spa services, visitors can also take in spectacular views of downtown and Mobile Bay.

Another popular destination for not only accommodations but spa time is The Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa. Nestled on 550 acres along Mobile Bay, The Grand is a stunning and historic estate often referred to as “The Queen of Southern Resorts.” Onsite, The Grand features a 20,000-square-foot spa all about tranquility and renewal of the mind and body.
